Change in plans

I just thought through some of the things I wanted to do with a computer, and it occurred that one of them was record tracks of music from a MIDI instrument, so I think I'll start-out by finding a good MIDI keyboard first. One that is USB/serial linkable to a computer, of course, and in the $100-$150 range.

Means the computer might not work out for another month or two, but that really isn't a problem. Just means that the parts will be cheaper. And I'll not have to wait to get a good keyboard. Hmm, sounds better just as I'm typing this. Should be able to start shopping online early next month. See if I can find a full-sized (full piano) keyboard. That would be what, 76 keys? Yeah, I can almost feel the plastic keys under my fingers now...

The deal

Here is the deal I'm making with myself - if I can save $300 dollars in the next 2-3 months (new money, not from current savings), I'll buy myself a computer case, motherboard, and processor. I've already got a cheap (but large) harddrive and a cheap video card, but both are installed on a computer that I don't own - it is owned by the company I'm contracting with.

If this works out, I'll have a computer for my room (might be able to borrow a monitor, I think). I should also be able to grab a wireless card on the cheap to connect to the frighteningly well-protected office network (I should know, I admin it).

Are there better things I could spend it on or save up for? I'm sure. But I'm also sure that, whatever the future holds, it will involve me and a computer. And this looks like a good way to get one.

I should just rename this blog "Dallas picture of the day". Ah well. A Dallas close-up today. The auto-fill flash overdid it, but it was getting on to dusk so the light was really bad.
